These soft, buttery dinner rolls are a favorite year-round and especially welcome at holiday meals. They are tender, rich with butter flavor, and perfect fresh from the oven. At our house we simply call them butter buns.
Making Homemade Dinner Rolls
Note: This recipe is written for a two-pound bread machine and uses the dough setting.
Follow the order of ingredients recommended by your bread machine manual. For this batch I used the basic program with a medium crust. Check the dough after five to ten minutes of kneading by opening the machine and inspecting the mixture; it should form a smooth, cohesive ball.
Homemade Dinner Roll Ingredients in the Bread Machine
If the dough seems too dry, add liquid a teaspoon at a time until the texture is correct. If it’s too sticky or wet, add flour a tablespoon at a time. When kneading is complete, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it in half, then continue dividing until you have 16 to 18 pieces of roughly equal size.
Shape each portion into a smooth roll and arrange them on a greased baking sheet. Cover the rolls with a clean, lightweight kitchen towel and let them rise for about 30 minutes, until noticeably puffy.
Here’s how the buns look after rising for half an hour.
After the rise, remove the towel and bake the rolls in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until golden brown on top. Transfer the baked rolls to a cooling rack to cool slightly before serving.

Buttery Dinner Roll Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 large egg
3 1/4 cups bread flour
4 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons dry milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter
1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Add ingredients to your bread machine in the order specified by its manual. Use the dough setting to prepare the dough. If you can’t find your manual, consult your machine’s manufacturer or support resources for guidance.
Quick Dough Option: If you need to speed up the process, substitute 2 teaspoons of rapid-rise yeast for the 1 1/2 teaspoons of active dry yeast and use the quick dough setting, if your machine offers it. Adjust rise and bake times as needed when using rapid-rise yeast.
