You Know You’re a Mom When: Funny Moments Every Parent Recognizes

This post is sponsored by Similac. I was compensated for this post but all opinions are my own.

I spent more than two decades of my life without children — lots of photos of me traveling and enjoying life solo. Thanks to what I jokingly call “Momnesia,” that chapter feels like it belongs to someone else.

Momnesia isn’t a bad thing. Like amnesia, it erases the memory of a simpler time when the only person you were responsible for was yourself.

Motherhood changes everything. Each mom’s journey is unique, but many of us share common moments — both chaotic and joyful — that create instant understanding between parents. I love it when moms can laugh at everyday parenting situations. One of my favorite recurring themes is the “You Know You’re a Mom When” list.

Below are several of my favorite “You know you’re a mom when” moments. I’ve experienced most of these at one point or another. Can you relate? How would you finish the sentence, “You know you’re a mom when…”? Share yours in the comments.

  • You can’t remember the last time you used the bathroom alone.
  • You attempt to close and lock the bathroom door for a few minutes of privacy and this happens:

you know you're a mom when (1)

  • You realize you’ve just watched an entire episode of a kids’ show by yourself.
  • Grocery shopping without children feels like a mini vacation.
  • You haven’t slept through the night in years.
  • Waking up at 7 AM counts as “sleeping in.”
  • At the end of the day you discover dried baby spit-up on your shoulder.
  • You fantasize about going to bed — and sometimes act on that fantasy the moment the house quiets down.
  • Your purse collection has been replaced by diaper bags.
  • You have fed a baby while sitting on the toilet.

The short film “The Mother ‘Hood” had me laughing and tearing up. It captures many of the mom stereotypes we encounter in everyday life and highlights how quick we are to judge one another. Then something happens that gently reminds us: despite different parenting choices, we all share one deeply important bond. I don’t want to spoil the moment — watch it and see for yourself:
