Tooth pain can be debilitating, and many of us look for fast, effective solutions. Over-the-counter painkillers can help, but sometimes a topical, natural option applied directly to the gums offers extra comfort between doses.

After a recent tooth extraction and implant, I wanted a natural option to soothe soreness when pain medication began to wear off. Since I already had many of the essential oils on hand, I created my own oil blend. That allowed me to control dilution and adjust strength depending on the pain.

Benefits of These Essential Oils For Toothache

This blend uses hemp seed oil as a carrier and a combination of essential oils known for pain-relief and anti-inflammatory properties: clove, manuka, peppermint, cinnamon, myrrh, frankincense and optional CBD oil.

This natural remedy can be useful for various dental and gum issues, including:

  • wisdom tooth pain or post-extraction soreness;
  • mild tooth infections;
  • gum pain and inflammation;
  • post-implant soreness;
  • tooth sensitivity;
  • supportive care for gum disease;
  • occasional use for general oral comfort.

The combined oils act as a natural topical anesthetic and offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Used responsibly and in appropriate dilution, they help reduce pain and inflammation.

Hemp Oil (As Carrier Oil)

Hemp seed oil dilutes essential oils for safe topical use and brings its own benefits. It’s moisturizing, has anti-inflammatory properties, and pairs well with CBD if you choose to include it. It also has good bioavailability and is generally safe for limited oral exposure.

CBD Oil

CBD oil contains compounds that can have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate pain. Some research also suggests cannabinoids may help reduce bacterial growth in oral biofilms, which could be an added benefit in oral care blends.

Creating your own oil blend is straightforward. Use high-quality, pure oils for the best results and to minimize the risk of irritation. The basic components are:

  • clove essential oil;
  • manuka essential oil;
  • myrrh essential oil;
  • frankincense essential oil;

How to Make This Oil For Toothache

How to Use This Natural Oil for Tooth Pain

Apply 2 drops of the blended oil to the gum near the painful tooth and gently massage with a clean finger. For longer contact, soak a small piece of gauze or a thin cotton pad in the oil and place it on the affected area. This helps the oil remain in place while its properties are absorbed.

Use a few drops on your finger and immediately apply on your gums.

Repeat as needed up to 2–3 times daily until pain decreases. If pain persists or worsens, it may indicate a more serious dental issue and you should consult your dentist promptly.

Alternatives

If you don’t have time to blend your own oil or lack some ingredients, you can purchase a pre-diluted oral oil formula or an undiluted essential oil blend to dilute in a carrier oil at home.

Other suitable carrier oils include:

  • melted coconut oil;
  • almond oil;
  • olive oil;
  • calendula oil.

This DIY oil blend can be a helpful natural tool for temporary toothache relief and to ease gum inflammation. I personally used a similar blend to help with tooth pain related to a sinus infection and found it effective as a supportive measure. It’s inexpensive and simple to prepare, but always prioritize professional dental care if problems persist.
