Creamy vegan hot chocolate made with cacao powder, dark chocolate, and Chocolate SunButter. Perfect for a cozy cold-weather treat!

Hello friends,
I’m sharing this SunButter Hot Chocolate recipe now in case you want to enjoy one more cup before spring fully arrives.
Even though the days are warming up, hot chocolate is never out of season when you want a comforting, chocolatey drink. I developed this version on a cold day and loved it so much I couldn’t wait to share it.
This hot chocolate is rich and silky while remaining fully plant-based. It relies on just a few wholesome ingredients for deep chocolate flavor and a satisfying texture without dairy or added oils.

The Creamiest Vegan Hot Chocolate
The recipe grew from my Vegan Dark Hot Chocolate base and a spur-of-the-moment idea to add Chocolate SunButter after spotting a peanut-butter hot chocolate in a cookbook. The addition was a happy accident—the result is luxuriously creamy, thick, and deeply chocolatey.
Because Chocolate SunButter blends chocolate and sunflower butter, it adds both flavor and body to the drink with only a touch of sweetness. The finished cup is indulgent but still simple and nourishing.

What You Need to Make SunButter Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
- 2 tsp unsweetened raw cacao powder
- ¼ cup dairy-free dark chocolate chips (or chopped dark chocolate)
- 1 tbsp Chocolate SunButter
- 1–2 tsp pure maple syrup, optional (to taste)
- Pinch of cinnamon, optional
That’s all you need for two generous mugs.

How to Make SunButter Hot Chocolate
This comes together on the stovetop in under 10 minutes.
- Pour the almond milk into a medium saucepan and warm it over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
- Whisk in the cacao powder, chopped chocolate or chocolate chips, Chocolate SunButter, and a pinch of cinnamon until smooth and lump-free.
- Taste and add maple syrup in teaspoon increments until you reach your preferred sweetness.
- Ladle into mugs and top with optional shaved chocolate or an extra pinch of cinnamon. Serve immediately.

How to Serve SunButter Hot Chocolate
This hot chocolate is perfect on a chilly afternoon or any time you want a warm, chocolatey hug. Because Chocolate SunButter adds some sweetness on its own, start with a small amount of maple syrup and adjust to taste.
If you’re making drinks for a group, double or triple the ingredients and heat in a saucepan or small stockpot. Finish each mug with shaved chocolate or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a pretty, cozy touch.
Personalize sweetness and spice to your liking—some prefer a darker, less sweet cup while others enjoy a medium-sweet balance.
Enjoy!
