I’m currently on a grapevine wreath kick. Last month I made a fall wreath with the same base, and after that visit to Trader Joe’s—where I found grapevine wreath bases for $3.99—I bought a couple more to save for Christmas. Today I’m sharing the wreath I made with one of those bases.

Materials you’ll need

  • Grapevine wreath base
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Festive holiday florals (red berries and complementary greenery)
  • A focal point (for this wreath I used pinecones)
  • Accent pieces (burlap petals or similar)

I shopped for florals at Joann’s when their Christmas selection was out and I had a 20% off coupon. When I pick florals, I bring the wreath base to the store and mock up the arrangement to make sure the materials work together—I’m a very visual crafter and that extra step saves time later.

With grapevine wreaths I tend to favor natural elements. For this design I planned to cover most of the base with red berries. At home I laid out the sprigs first, spacing them evenly, before weaving them into the grapevine.

Once I had the layout, I began weaving the floral sprigs through the grapevines.

After weaving the sprigs through the back, I secured them with floral wire—bringing the wire from the front through to the back and twisting tightly so everything stays in place. I arranged the pinecones and burlap petals as an off-center focal cluster on the front of the wreath.

What I love about grapevine wreaths is how simple and quick they are to assemble. Often it takes longer to gather supplies than it does to put the wreath together.

Now for the rest of the Holiday Craft Party: here’s what the other contributors made with their wreaths. Be sure to visit each project for more inspiration.
